Archimedes’ Sticks

C15-5352-W0

【Product Description】

Set of three (3) metal square prisms (aluminum, brass, stainless steel) with engraved scales for measuring buoyant force acting on submerged portion of the stick.

【Overall Advantages to Users】

  • Set of three types of metal sticks with different weight and specific gravity (relative density) to better understand the Archimedes’ principle.
  • Hang one of the sticks from the hook of the Narika’s Newton Meter (A05-4065) and partly submerge the stick in fluid (water).

【Keywords】

  • Archimedes’ principle
  • Buoyant force
  • Displacement volume
  • Water pressure

【To all users】

  • Size of each stick is 1 x 1 x 11cm with engraved scales (1cm divisions). Therefore, when submerged depth of the stick is 1cm, the volume of partly submerged stick will be exactly 1cm3, which makes it easier to measure the buoyant force acting on submerged stick and helps better understand the Archimedes’ principle that states the buoyant force acting on a submerged object is equal to the weight of the fluid (water) the object displaces.
  • As a set of three types of metal sticks (aluminum, brass, stainless) with engraved scales, it helps discover how difference in material and/or weight affects the buoyant force.

【To teachers】

  • Buoyant force is one of the concepts of forces difficult to imagine for students. Hence, students will better understand the Archimedes’ principle through experiments using the metal sticks in combination with the Narika’s Newton Meter and/or Narika’s Newton Spring balance.
  • The weight of fluid (water) displaced by the metal stick can be easily measured just by reading the scale instead of using a Eureka can.

【To students】

  • Set of three types of metal square prisms with different weight and specific gravity (relative density) but with the same size (1 x 1 x 11cm), which helps students better understand connection between the weight and/or size of each stick and its buoyant force.
  • Easy to read scales from 360 degrees because each side of the stick has engraved.
  • Material: Aluminum, Brass, Stainless steel
  • Size: 10 x 10 x 110mm
  • Weight: Aluminum – 29g, Brass – 92g, Stainless steel – 83g
  • Others: With hook at one end of each stick
